Senate body urges overseas Pakistanis for investment

Senate’s Standing Committee on Commerce Convener Dr Karim Ahmed Khawaja on Tuesday said the Pakistanis who migrated to other countries at the time of Partition should be attracted to invest in the country.
He said at the time of partition, hundreds of families migrated to
Europe and Arab countries and established their businesses abroad.
“Pakistani billionaires living abroad specially in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Australia, and India should be facilitated and given maximum opportunities to invest in Pakistan”, Dr Karim Khawaja said while chairing the committee on Tuesday.
Senator Haji Saifullah Bangish, Vice Chancellor Sindh University Nisar Ahmed Mughul and other officials attended the meeting.
Mughul informed the committee that Pakistani people who migrated to the US are serving in different fields including Engineering, medical and education in the US.
Dr Khawaja said that overseas Pakistanis should be attracted to invest in Pakistan through Interior Ministry, Foreign Ministry and commercial attaches abroad.
“If overseas Pakistanis use their sources in Pakistan, the country can get rid of depending on other countries and loan providing international institutions.”
Board of Investment informed the committee that in order to attract investment in the country, letters for the Pakistani origin were written to 80 commercial councillors abroad but no positive response was received.
Dr Khawaja said that by facilitating 321 Pakistani-origin investors, the education and energy sector of the country can be improved.
He directed that in the next meeting, attendance of commercial attaches in Hong Kong, the higher officials of foreign ministry, interior ministry and boards of investment from all provinces should be ensured.
