The government has assured the Supreme Court that local government elections in all cantonment areas would be held by September 15 this year.
The assurance was given by Defence Secretary Asif Yaseen Malik during the hearing of a case regarding delay in the local bodies’ elections in cantonment areas.
The three-member bench‚ headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry‚ asked the defence secretary to give a written guarantee in this regard.
The court during the hearing observed that holding local bodies elections in cantonment areas was a constitutional obligation and federal and provincial governments should not turn away from their responsibilities.
