Suspend death penalties: HRCP

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Monday called upon the president and the prime minister to extend the informal moratorium on death row prisoners’ executions after a presidential order suspending hangings expired on June 30.
Expressing its concern over the order not being reissued as had been the practice since 2008, the HRCP said that there were at least 8,000 death row prisoners in the country’s jails and thousands more charged with or being tried for death penalty offences.
The commission wrote: “We wish to point out that not one of the pressing reasons for HRCP’s longstanding opposition to the death penalty in Pakistan have changed in any way since the government decided to institute an informal moratorium on executions in late 2008. The critical and well-documented deficiencies of the law, administration of justice, police investigation methods and chronic corruption in Pakistan have not improved at all since 2008.
In these circumstances, capital punishment makes misadministration of justice highly probably, which is wholly unacceptable in any civilised society, even more so when the punishment is irreversible, maintained the HRCP. Contrary to the much deterrence argument, the death penalty has not improved the law and order situation in the country, as evidenced by research in many countries.”
The HRCP requested the president to immediately issue an order extending suspension of execution.

  1. Any civilized society or country does not wish to carry on DEATH PENALTIES, but HRCP must raise its supports and hardworking to eliminate the extreme crimes which cause and lead to this fatal punishment.HRCP is also a shelter of criminals. And only verbally oppose it.HRCP must be positive and more active for serious and basic human violations in the society and sort out the ways for the improvement of common man.

  2. I support death penalty because it gives the right to the people the right to get some consolation. Death sentence also makes it clear that there is a line, cross it and you pay the ultimate price.

Last but not least, our religion, makes it clear that yes there are some crimes which deserve penalty.
