A petition filed in the Supreme Court on Monday pled that the former law secretary’s letter to Swiss authorities was malafide and prayed for initiating contempt of court proceedings against the president, former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, former law minister Farooq Naik and former law secretary Yasmin Abbasi for committing fraud.
The petitioner, Mahmood Akhtar Naqvi, said the letter to the Swiss government was malafide as it was fraudulently written in collusion with Asif Ali Zardari, Ashraf, Naik and Yasmin and, therefore, prayed for initiation of proceedings against them for contempt of court, registering a criminal case against them and placing their names on the exit-control list (ECL).
The existence of the letter became public last week when Attorney General Munir A Malik informed the Supreme Court that although the previous PPP government wrote a letter to the Swiss authorities in compliance with the court order in the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) case, it also sent a second secret letter to a law firm requesting for an official confirmation about the Swiss authorities’ inability to revive $60 million graft cases against the president.
The filed petition stated that the communication made to the law firm was tantamount to committing contempt of court.
The petition added that the purpose of the second letter was obstruction of justice.
The alleged secret letter was written to Dr Nicholas Jeanding of law firm Fontanetassocies Geneva by the former law secretary, Justice (r) Yasmin on November 22 last year, Malik had told the court.
