The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Monday took a strong exception to the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) chief executive for failing to honour his commitment on power outages and urged the government to take note of the situation.

In a statement, LCCI President Farooq Iftikhar said that the LESCO chief had committed to 10 hours of load shedding during his visit to the LCCI on June 20, but in the past few days load shedding had registered record highs.

The LCCI president urged the Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif to probe into LESCO’s affairs and remove all incompetent and corrupt officers.

Iftikhar said that if the LESCO chief was unsure about electricity availability, it would have been better to avoid committing anything definite to the chamber.

The LCCI president said that a number of industrialists had rescheduled working hours after LESCO’s promise, unaware that the power situation would soon return to its dismal past.

Iftikhar said that electricity was a major raw material for many industries and unscheduled power cuts damaged the production process, but it seemed that those at LESCO’s helm cared little about trade and industry in the country.
