125 kills, 8 years, one final season: Dexter prepares to awe

A hundred and twenty-five kills. Eight years. One final season. America’s favorite serial killer Dexter Morgan’s (Michael C. Hall) killing spree is finally coming to an end as Dexter returns for its eighth and final season this Sunday on Showtime. But Dexter isn’t finishing this twisted journey alone: His emotional wreck of a sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) is set to face her own demons in the hit series’ final hour after going against everything she believes in to protect her murderous brother. So yes, a happy ending is surely in the cards for the Morgan siblings!
We chatted with Hall, Carpenter and returning guest star Yvonne Strahovski as Dexter’s murderous love interest Hannah on the red carpet at the series finale party, where they dished on the final season and reflected on their eight years of working on the iconic show.
“We’re feeling a lot of things,” Hall tells E! News of Dexter coming to an end. “We’re feeling a lot of pride; we’re feeling a lot of love, a lot of affection. It’s a real family.”
Carpenter echoes her ex-husband and “best friend” Hall’s sentiment, saying, “It’s bittersweet, but I am going to miss the people. The show is going out on a really nice note. We’re finishing it the way we want, so there’s nothing to be sad about, really!”
And how can you be sad when working on Dexter was like an eight-year-long party?! “Eight years is like college twice! We had a weekly kegger,” Hall jokes
Now that we’ve got the emotional stuff out of the way, it’s time to talk about the final season…even if Hall and Carpenter were tight-lipped when it came to scoop. “I feel like this season is unlike any other that we’ve ever shot,” Carpenter explains. “I don’t even know how to prepare people for it, so I’m really curious. I can’t gauge it. Debra at least starts off in a place she’s never been before.”
A place Debra has been before means she’s no longer working for Miami Metro: Dex’s sis is now working for a private investigator, played by Sean Patrick Flannery, after killing LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) in the season seven finale left her an emotional mess. Of the new Deb, Carpenter admits, “It was crazy trying to play her in this way without rules or restraints While Hall wouldn’t dish any spoilers, he did say this about the series’ ending: “It’s a decisive ending that I’m really excited about.” Decisive?! Gulp! Finally, Strahovski offered up a tease about Hannah, who escaped from prison in the finale and left an ominous gift on Dexter’s doorstep, and her role in the final season. “As usual, Hannah is going to stir things up a little bit with an unexpected surprise visit maybe,” she spills. Dexter’s final season premieres Sunday, June 30, at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
