Military dictators ruled country for long time: Justice Chaudhry

Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry on Wednesday said Pakistan was a democratic state, but was ruled by the military dictators for quite sometime.
The CJP expressed these views while meeting with a delegation, led by Justice Sidi Yahefdhou, chief justice of Islamic Republic of Mauritania, and Justice Sheikh Ahmed Mehmood and Justice Ba Moukhtar in the Supreme Court.
Welcoming the delegation, Justice Chaudhry said, “It is an honour to receive such a high level judicial delegation from the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. Exchange of delegations is always a good tradition to benefit from each other’s experience and knowledge.”
He introduced to the delegation the judicial system of Pakistan. He said that Pakistan’s law had Islamic premise and content as much as the constitution provided that no law shall be made which was repugnant to the Islamic injunctions.
Chaudhry added that the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) has been established to adjudge as to whether or not a particular provision of law is repugnant to the Islamic injunctions and appeal against the decision of the FSC was filed before the Shariat Appellate Bench.
The Mauritanian CJ reciprocated the sentiments expressed by Chaudhry and explained judicial system of his country and the working of court.
He pointed out the similarities between the legal systems of both the countries and said that Islamic laws were enforced in both the countries; therefore it is a good opportunity to share each other’s experiences and reforms and improve our respective judicial systems.
