Mandela’s condition ‘still critical’

Former South African president Nelson Mandela remains in a critical condition in hospital, the government has said. A statement from President Jacob Zuma’s office on Tuesday said doctors were doing their best to ensure the “recovery, well-being and comfort” of the 94-year-old anti-apartheid icon, who was hospitalised more than two weeks ago with a lung infection. On Monday, Zuma asked his country to pray for Mandela, who he said was “asleep” when he visited him at a hospital in the capital Pretoria. The president said that doctors at the Pretoria Mediclinic Heart Hospital were doing everything possible to help Mandela feel comfortable on his 17th day in hospital.
