Sindh government has decided in principle to extend all relevant benefits of labour laws to workers associated with the agriculture sector and fisheries. A senior official of provincial labour department said that workers associated with the two sectors were soon to be recognised as formal workers through a policy document that would also be made part of the provincial legislation. He said a draft of provincial policy on home-based workers had also been developed and was intended to develop strategies, plans and programmes for the protection and promotion of the rights and benefits of home-based workers. The policy, he said, affirmed the government’s commitment to bring the law in accordance with constitutional requirements and in conformity with the principles developed by international human rights treaties.
“Under the policy, these workers will also be provided with social security benefits that are presently applicable only to the workers from formally recognised employment sectors,” he said.
