IHC issues notice to AIOU VC in fake degree case

The Islamabad High Court on Thursday issued notice to the vice chancellor of the Allama Iqbal Open University, Nazir Ahmed Sangi, in a case seeking his removal from the position on charges of holding a fake PhD degree.

A single-member IHC bench, comprising Justice Noorul Haq N Qureshi, resumed the hearing of the plea filed by the Employees Welfare Association of the university though its counsel Khurram M Qureshi.

During the course of the hearing, the counsel for the petitioner apprised the bench that Sangi was holding a PhD degree from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom but unfortunately neither the particular subject of the alleged PhD was mentioned in the degree nor was the area of research mentioned.

He argued that per PhD degree of the respondent dated July 20, 1989 while he was admitted to the university on July 6, 1989 which either meant that Sangi was the only person in the world who had passed his PhD exam along with the research work, within 14 days or his degree was fake.

“Sangi’s degree appears doubtful as it also contains grammatical mistakes,” he said.

He requested the court remove Sangi from the position of vice chancellor of AIOU and declare him incompetent and ineligible for government service.
