Zulfiqar Cheema has been appointed the inspector general of Motorways Police, reports said on Tuesday.
The government earlier sacked Motorways IG Zafar Abbas Lak for running a congratulatory advertisement on state expenses.
Cheema was currently working as the Passports DG.
Lak was sacked from office on June 12 over publishing banners regarding congratulation to Nawaz Sharif for becoming next prime minister of the country.
Nawaz later barred ministries and autonomous bodies from issuing such advertisements.
A few days ago, the government had issued show-cause notices to the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) president and Motorway IG over congratulatory advertisements.
The PM removed Abbas from his office and ordered him to report to the Establishment Division.
Separately‚ Javed Iqbal was appointed the Islamabad Police Academy commandant.
