Shahrukh Jatoi asks for justice

When Shahrukh Jatoi filed an appeal against the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) verdict in the Sindh High Court, he also reportedly wrote letters to the human rights advocacy groups to seek their support against his conviction.

Shahrukh, who was sentenced to death after being found guilty in the Shahzeb Khan murder case on June 7, addressed the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Chairperson Zohra Yusuf in the letter, with the subject reading Appeal of Justice. The letter was also forwarded to eminent lawyer Asma Jahangir, Supreme Court Bar Association President Israrul Haq, Sindh High Court Bar Association President Mustafa Lakhani and Zia Ahmed Awan of Madadgar.

“I faced the trial with an open heart and mind and put my faith in the judicial system of Pakistan,” Shahrukh said in the letter. “I am, however, shocked at the judgment as I did not kill Shahzeb Khan.”

Shahrukh said that he hasn’t written the letter to gain sympathy but to highlight the “heinous” role played by the media throughout the trial and “unnecessary intervention of the judiciary in the investigation of the case which led to miscarriage of justice which, in turn, could lead to the end of my life.” Shahrukh also alleged that the verdict was out before the trial even began, adding that his pictures holding a gun were aired on television and plastered across newspapers as if he was a terrorist.

The convict further stated that he was denied a fair trial and questioned that even if it is assumed that he committed the crime, would it be right to condemn him to death for a momentary lapse of judgment? He urged the HRCP to not let another youth die, adding that two wrongs don’t make a right. “The system’s job is to reform an individual, not kill him.”

Yusuf, meanwhile, acknowledged that a regional office of the commission forwarded her the letter through an email in which Shahrukh has pleaded his innocence and complained against the media. “Such cases do not fall under our domain and can only be solved through a process in the court,” she said, adding that HRCP does not take up cases that only benefits individuals rather than public at large.

Lakhani and Awan, however, denied receiving any letter. Awan said that the convict can write to anyone in his personal capacity but it wouldn’t be of any help to him as the matter is sub judice. “It was a test case and timely conviction only upholds the rule of law.”

Despite several attempts, Shahrukh’s counsel Shoukat Hussain Zubedi could not be reached for his comments. Jamshed Ahmed Khokhar, one of the lawyers in the panel, however, said that he was unaware of any correspondence that Shahrukh might have had with HRCP from the jail. “Neither Shahrukh nor his family have informed us about any such letter.”

The Superintendent of the Karachi Central Jail, Kazi Nazir Ahmed, expressed his ignorance about the letter. “The letter hasn’t been routed through me nor was it brought to my knowledge,” said Ahmed, adding that the letter might have been forwarded by a relative of Shahrukh.

  1. these words " I am, however, shocked at the judgment as I did not kill Shahzeb Khan.” i've got tears in my eyes….
and yes he said it right, two wrongs dont make a right,What would we get if he gets hanged?would the situation in Pakistan get any better?100s of people have been killed after Shahzeb,KNOWN TERRORISTS have been released by "OUR" courts and we think that if this 17/19 yrs old BOY will get hanged so the situation will get any better. *sigh* whats wrong with us all? i dont know if i've heard it right or not but the majority of people that i know is with shahrukh for a reason (that THEY say) is that he did not kill shahzeb neither did siraj. It was someone who killed him and left for london the very next morning.my point here is not whether he's innocent or not but my point is THERE IS A DOUBT,we all believed on OUR media OUR judiciary..WE know where we stand today,Everything is on sale here, even the people so why are forgetting that the victims party is also wealthy enough to feed our media.till now we havnt heard Shahrukh saying anything for himself,we should give him a chance .we CANNOT just take somone life because "WE" hate him because "WE" think he killed Shahzeb khan.we belong to a dead nation, each one of us have gt frustrated by whatever that is happening in our country,i'll give an example just to make my point clear.recently a man who was selling ice on the road of Sialkot killed a 8 years old boy JUST BECAUSE he took a piece of ICE from his stall.can you imagine the amount of frustration he was feeling at that moment,HE KILLED A CHILD OVR A PIECE OF ICE !!!!!
Pakistan we need to realize that our youth is dying,Our future is being killed by our own hands,i dont know what to be dont with this young man shahrukh but i think of him as a guy who has been living in Australia, studying there,he came to OUR country,HIS country and got into all this…GOD DAMMIT if we'll do this to OUR OWN people so who would want to come to our county?
Pakistan needs to wake up..our youth needs to be protected.

And, there is 'something fishy' about you …

    • "What would we get if he gets hanged?would the situation in Pakistan get any better? "
What will happen if we leave all the killers who are confined in jails of pakistan?? what will happen if we will hand over all of the KPK to taliban?? its not the matter what will happen if he will be hanged?? the matter is he has to pay for what he did. we need more faster jurisdiction system for the killers and terrorist in pakistan to be hang for a long lasting peace in paksitan.

    • This Death is necessary to protect our YOUTH…. so that no one can kill the child of any mother. Shahrukh's death will tell the people that they have to pay for their act!!!!

    • protecting the youth which is actually going around killing the youth at free will is not how a society can function. 60% of pakistans population is considered young and this is our time to put the youth to proper use, however protecting criminal minds like shahrukh and siraj is definitely not a step in the right direction. There were enough credible witnesses to understand and register to our small minded heads that shahrukh and siraj did murder shahzeb on a cold night of december 25th where that gentleman was returning from his sisters wedding reception. This is an act of insanity and anyone who can be crazy enough to do this should be punished with the highest punishment. Shahrukh however still has a chance of getting away even after his sentence due to his strong background. I hope these criminals are hanged on live television, mind you I am not one for violence, but for a society which is so dysfunctional and immune to living with killers around them, this should happen.

  2. @Fatima
Come'on there is a doubt ? It has been proved in court, so better stop propagating your agenda here.

  3. In the court of law…………………………………………… SHAHRUKH JATOI has been found the MURDERER!!__Shahrukh WAS MAN ENOUGH to take someone's life, Shahrukh SHOULD BE MAN ENOUGH TO FACE THE DEATH SENTENCE.__SHAHRUKH own up to your acts. BE A MAN! STAND TALL AND PROUD!__

    • .
"BE A MAN! STAND TALL AND PROUD!__" …
You mean one can be proud of his crime once he is delivered the punishment ???
      .
Is that your 'poetic flare' or 'fu-ck-ed-up mind' ???
      .

  4. if he gets punished Fatima my der then other such kind of ppl would think twice before taking any innocents life. I fail to understand why r y ou against sharukh being hanged. How would u put a stop to all these killings then?

  5. They are killers and liars. These ppl should not be pardoned at all. We have had enough ppl killed in our country for no reasons.

  6. I appeal to the authorities that this SHAME ON YOUTH be hanged Publically so that no spoilt brat dare again mess with peaceful people. and I appeal to the authority that he be Hanged as quickly as possible. It just shocks and sickens me when I visualize all that would've went on between this Cruel arrogant BSTRD and the innocent shahzeb who was just trying to protect the honor of his sister. and I suggest Fatima to spend few days in Jail with Shahrukh Jatoi just to comfort him in his last days if she's so concerned about him.

  7. Whether he deserves it or not, he is right or wrong, to some extent i agree with him that the media did play some role in it and sorry to say but after reading majority of your views i am saddened at the hatred found in this country, the death sentence should be abolished. If you really love to hang people the rapist and the na maloom afraad and the weirdo's sitting near the afghan border should be hanged publicly. Though in my opinion the death sentence is useless and in our country as usual majority of the laws are misused such as the beloved blasphemy law.

  8. “I faced the trial with an open heart and mind and put my faith in the judicial system of Pakistan,” Shahrukh said in the letter. “I am, however, shocked at the judgment as I did not kill Shahzeb Khan.”

Hahaahaha…right! What a liar! Yes you did not pull the trigger but your hired goons — whose guns and bullets your father paid for to 'protect' you at any cost and whom you misused to bully others — DID (which you do not deny and know it is a fact. THAT is what makes you guilty of murder. Plain and simple really!

  9. I jst want to say that sharukh is innocent……….it is being unfaire….nd inshallah he will get justice soon…..
