3 injured in blast at PAF base in Karachi

Three security personnel of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) were wounded in a low-intensity explosion that took place along the wall of PAF Faisal Base near Karsaz on Sharah-e-Faisal Sunday evening.
Extra contingents of law enforcers including Rangers and police cordoned off the site immediately after the explosion. PAF officials also inspected the blast site.
Bomb disposal squad (BDS) was dispatched to the site, but the nature of the blast had not yet been determined. While quoting initial findings, BDS experts said the explosion was carried out with a locally manufactured cracker.
According to the Sharah-e-Faisal SHO Arshad Janjua, initial investigations suggested that culprits on a motorcycle threw the cracker near the main gate of the base, injuring three PAF personnel who were on guard duty.
After the PNS Mehran base attack in May 2011, this was the second attack on Faisal Base. On February 5, 2013, unidentified assailants hurled two crackers in front of the air base flyover, injuring a pedestrian.
Meanwhile Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah took notice of hand grenade attacks in Karachi’s Landhi and Karsaz areas.
A press release from the CM Secretariat said Shah sought an immediate report from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on both incidents.
Shah directed that police patrolling be enhanced in the city and police pickets be increased in sensitive areas.
He further directed that protection of lives and property of the people be ensured and all possible steps be taken for maintenance of law and order.
