The authorities have yet to take any action against butchers selling unhygienic meat in the city.

According to the consumers, “The local administration has fixed prices in the market, but no solid mechanism is in place to check the meat’s quality and the shopkeepers’ prices.”

They alleged that most butchers injected water into slaughtered animals’ veins to increase their weight for greater profits.

According to reports, residents are suffering from diseases including high blood pressure and Hepatitis by consuming unhygienic meat as many butchers have been selling unhealthy animals.

Residents alleged that butchers were illegally slaughtering animals in their houses or shops instead of the slaughterhouses as it allowed them to circumvent regulations.

“The hygiene at butcher shops is very poor, but the authorities have shown no interest in acting against the violators,” said government servant Amjad.

Another resident maintained that most butcher shops were located on main roads due to which the meat was contaminated by germs, dust and other pollutants from the road.

Citizens alleged that butchers bribed the concerned officials to get substandard slaughtered animals approved without formal inspection.

According to a health expert, the meat currently available in the market was not fit for human consumption, causing dangerous diseases like typhoid, pneumonia, urinary tract infection and hemorrhagic colitis.

However, reports suggested that some butchers had been fined by the authorities over the sale of low quality meat.
