In reaction to May 29 US drone attack which killed top Taliban commander Mufti Waliur Rahman along with several others, militants have intensified attacks against the allied troops camping across the border in Afghanistan. In first week of June, more than 50 dead bodies of local and foreign militants shifted from Afghanistan into scattered areas of North Waziristan.
Afghan and tribal sources told Pakistan Today that soon after the assassination of Mufti Waliur Rahman, militants attacked an Afghan police post in Warzhani area of Zerook district in Paktika province on May 31. The attack was believed to be very severe and militants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, central Asia and other countries also contributed in the attack.
Soon after that, Afghan officials found bodies of around 21 militants in Orgon, headquarters of the Paktika province. At the same time, officials claimed killing of more than 60 insurgents in retaliatory action. According to police chief Aziz Ullah Karwa, most of the bodies have been shifted by mats across the border in Waziristan region.
The tribal sources both in Miranshah and Mirali have confirmed retrieving dead bodies of killed militants from across the border Afghanistan. “Majority of them have been buried at different graveyards in North Waziristan. Only 26 of them came from Mirali and its surrounding areas.”
According to reports from Afghanistan, the NATO air squads bombed dins of militants in Helmand on June 3, killing at least 24 militants. The bodies were first shifted to Qandahar and later on to border regions between North Waziristan and southern provinces of Afghanistan. Tribal sources in Miranshah and Mirali also mentioned retrieving bodies of killed militants from Qandahar area.
Ironically, militants sheltering in North Waziristan are burying the killed militants without determining their identity. All those who were killed either in clashes with Pakistan’s security forces or with US-led allies, are not all Mujahideen. Even foreigners have been reportedly buried in North Waziristan. Though the militants are burying their foreign accomplices everywhere in North Waziristan, top commanders are buried at Saidgee and Deegan graveyards.
