Govt employees given 10 percent raise

Following countrywide protests, the federal government on Saturday announced 10 percent increase in government employees’ salaries.
Finance Minister Ishaq Dar announced that the government has decided to give 10 percent increase in the salaries of government employees.
Talking to reporters outside parliament, he said a committee formed by the PM recommended 7.5 to 10 percent increase and finally it was decided to give 10 percent increase.
Pakistan Today in its Saturday’s edition shared this news by reporting that amid strong criticism by the opposition and government employees, the government has decided to announce 10 percent increase in the salaries.
Earlier, while announcing the budget, the PML-N took the plea that under the country’s economic situation it could not raise the salaries. But at the same time, it imposed additional one percent general sales tax (GST), following which the prices of petroleum products, CNG, electricity, natural gas and other essentials went up, directly affecting the people’s budget.
Dar had formed a committee to review the possibility of an increase in the salaries on Thursday. The body recommended 7.5 percent increase. However, the minister said the government had decided to give 10 percent increase.
The finance minister said the raise in salaries of government employees would be effective from July 1.
