The under-construction multibillion rupees project, Pakistan Deep Water Container Port (PDWCP), will be opened for cargo handling by December this year, Minister for Ports and Shipping Kamran Michael said on Friday.
During a press briefing here at the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation’s head office, Michael also said the Ministry of Ports and Shipping would soon enter into various agreements with international firms to develop the country’s ports and shipping industry.
He hoped the ports and shipping sector would help Pakistan attain economic growth if its operations grew through untiring “struggle”.
He said the new government would leave no stone unturned to increase the country’s trade.
Michael informed reporters that the ministry would undertake a global marketing drive to signify the sector’s potential to increase its annual revenue level with further infrastructure development.
He said the ministry had targeted the ports and shipping sector and its related departments to increase revenues.
Michael urged the media to help his ministry know about the sector’s potential and corruption in its various departments so that issues could be settled easily.
He said the ministry had a plan to revive Port Qasim’s textile city project to invite local investment to build industry there which would help generate foreign exchange and local employment.
