The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday ordered that a full time chairman and managing director (MD) for Pakistan International Airline (PIA) be appointed, adding that PIA was an institution carrying national importance.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary asked Attorney General Munir A Malik to get necessary instructions from the prime minister and other relevant authorities in this regard.
The court observed that the defense secretary had to deal with important work and therefore could not be given additional charge of such a huge organisation.
The SC also directed for steps to rehabilitate PIA.
The attorney general informed the court that PIA was facing acute problems of administration‚ corruption and various other irregularities.
