Railways Federal Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique said on Wednesday that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government would take effective steps to improve Pakistan Railways.
He said that the federal government would allocate Rs. 64 billion for bringing stability to the railways ministry. He said that Pakistan Railways presented a bleak picture, adding that no solid steps were taken by the past government to make it a profitable organisation.
Talking to a private television channel, he said that Pakistan Railways has been producing unimpressive results for many years. He said that billions of rupees have been lost due to mismanagement in the railway sector.
Rafiq said that there was a serious need to revive the railways, and thePML-N government was determined to bring progress to the country, adding that it would take any difficult decisions that were needed.
Khawaja Saad Rafique said that measures would be taken to halt the losses being reported in different national institutions like Pakistan Railways, Pakistan Steel and PIA.
Replying to a question, he said that Pakistan Railway would pay back its loan to the State Bank of Pakistan.
Further, he informed that a neighbouring country’s successful model would be applied to uplift the Railways.
To another question he said that increasing train fare was not the solution to the institution’s problems, and he called upon Railway employees to help resolve the problems.
He also maintained that secret funds should be abolished.
Saad Rafiq said that those involved in ransacking the WAPDA office at Faisalabad would be punished according to the law, while policemen who had misbehaved during the protest demonstration would also be chastised.
