First time in the country’s medical history, the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC)’s cardiac surgeons conducted a successful by-pass operation of a two-and-a-half year old boy.
The PIC surgeons’ team’s Head Prof Abdul Waheed said on Monday that a hospital of Sialkot had referred Muhammad Tabeeb, who was suffering from a rare congenital defect of left main coronary artery of his heart, to the PIC. Tabeeb’s heart was working at 20 percent only. Though corrective procedure was not possible due to complex nature of disease, the PIC operated upon the minor boy successfully, he said. A blood vessel was harvested from his chest and grafted to left Coronary Artery, he explained.
First of its kind in Pakistan, he added, this challenging task was achieved by the PIC senior surgeons comprising Dr Tipu Khan and Dr Tabeeda Ejaz.
To a question, he said, the child was recovering fast, adding that the success of this operation, considering the patient’s age and complexity of the disease, was a great achievement for the PIC Department of Cardiac Surgery.
To another question, Prof Waheed said that the operation was done free of cost.
