The Sindh police have decided to place the ‘traffic camera’ project for Karachi under its central command and control surveillance system so as to make traffic monitoring, management and regulation more effective and coordinated.
The decision was made during a departmental meeting at the central police office to review different components of e-policing project for Karachi.
The meeting chaired by Inspector General of Sindh Police, Shahid Nadeem Baloch, acknowledged that under the traffic camera system 158 fixed cameras were fully operational at 40 different sites including major thoroughfares and intersections in Karachi.
These 158 fixed cameras were said to be besides 40 rotational cameras that could rotate up to 360 degrees round the clock. The senior officials including additional IG-traffic, director information technology-Sindh police and others were unanimous that the placement of traffic camera project under the central command and control surveillance system would also improve traffic monitoring and management besides expanding the surveillance network itself.
It was appreciated that 40 rotational cameras have been installed at quite a distance from regular traffic monitoring CCTVs so as to avoid overlapping and also avoid loss of available resources. The IG directed that the officials including those from license department, finance department, technical and transport sections to contribute to making the departmental decisions effective and beneficial for the citizens.
