Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq on Monday sought the details of over Rs 100 billion agreements with the Chinese companies for laying railway tracks and purchasing engines during President Asif Ali Zardari’s visit to China.

According to ministry sources, these agreements could be reviewed.

The sources said that without taking the minister into confidence, top Railway officials had completed the preparations for issuing tenders for laying the Shahdara-Faisalabad-Lala Musa track at a cost of $220 million. Further, the issue of 50 railway engines purchased was also being expedited by them so that the new government did not get a chance to suspend the agreements with China in this regard.

According to sources 61 of 69 engines purchased from the Chinese companies have broken down. Despite this, 15 more engines were being purchased from the Chinese companies.

The sources said the matter could also be referred to National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

  1. The same centuries old tactics. Instead of moving forward and improving the system, dig into the old files. Any agreement between 2 parties is certainly is not error-less, and some angry bureaucrate will magnify for sycophancy means. This would, perhaps, satify personal grudge but will do nothing good for the depatment. So, the young minister should look forward and backward.

  2. DearBetelQ8, it's not century old agreement. If irregularities have been done during CT government, culprit should be named and punished. Having witnessed personally the glory of PR, I was saddened to see the current state of express trains which, once, used to be a pride to travell on.
