Ban, Karzai express confidence in Nawaz

United Nation (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai expressed confidence in Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s leadership.
Ban said Pakistan would build on its democratic achievements and further strengthen its existing partnership with the world body under Sharif’s government.
In a message of congratulations to Sharif on assuming the office of prime minister‚ the UN chief said he was confident Sharif would ensure women’s empowerment‚ advancement of human rights‚ and progress towards the Millennium Development Goals.
The secretary-general praised Pakistan’s active and constructive role at the UN‚ especially its contribution to peacekeeping operations.
Ban said he was looking forward to working with Sharif and welcomed Pakistan’s support for regional cooperation‚ particularly since it contributed to supporting stability and reconciliation in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, Afghan President Hamid Karzai also felicitated Nawaz Sharif on becoming the prime minister.
In his message‚ President Karzai expressed confidence in Sharif, saying that with mutual efforts and cooperation‚ both countries would be able to fight the menace of terrorism and ensure peace‚ education and economic growth in the two nations.
Karzai also extended an invitation to the prime minister to visit Afghanistan.
