Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday won the coveted slot of Punjab chief minister for a third time with 300 votes and more than two-third majority. Speaking after his election as chief minister, Shahbaz vowed that the Punjab government would not rest until the plague of load shedding was put to an end.

His opponent, PTI’s Mian Mahmoodur Rashid, secured only 34 votes. Moreover, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) abstained from voting in today’s election.

Sharif will take oath of office at governor’s house in the evening.

Sharif and Rashid, who also enjoyed the support of Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid (PML-Q), were the only two candidates for the position.

The rule of division was used to ascertain the candidate enjoying the support of majority of the members. Moreover, separate lobbies had been earmarked for both candidates and members were asked to go for either of the two to ascertain the number of supporters each candidate enjoyed.

The PML-N secured a two-thirds majority in the assembly by bagging 305 seats in the May 11 general election and its nominee Iqbal secured 297 votes in the contest for the speaker’s office.

The PTI and the PML-Q jointly have 35 members in the house.

  1. What a fabulous system we have in our country. Four of the five years of of his last tenure were on a stay order by the court. We are a god forsaken people. Doomed.

  2. If he gets started now, he can end load shedding in about 20 years. Any improvements now will be very marginal because the electric utlity system is in bad shape and needs massive repairs and also repacements and upgrades. Added to these, there is neither gas nor coal available to fire up the generators. All of this takes money and the government does not have it. Forget foreign investment because of security situation and surely expecting any thing from MIAN BROTHERS would be futile, they are good at doing one thing for sure and that is NOTHING..

  3. But the question is, what was he doing for the last five years? The power shortage did not start yesterday; it has been a chronic problem for many years now.

  4. LOLSS! 2010 koh toh choro 1992 main yehee waada kiya tha. Ab kidhar hain woh waaday? Loadshedding kee in koh kya fikar? che che generators lagaay hain apnay mahlon main. Aik din bhee guzaaray nah aik normal shehri kay ghar main!! Bewakaoof qaum inheen koh vote daitee jaingee

  5. I really hope his brother Nawaz will control him and his big mouth,he is known to put his foot in his mouth

  6. Well the khadim of punjab is back for third time, had done too much for the punjab, beside the punjab educational boards damaged system and students of HSSC for the first time went on strike in 2011, im one of them. I have a hope that he will learn from his past that under his government many illegal work had been done by officials. Now saying to end the load shedding crisis, but it is not going to end tomorrow have to wait still almost 3 years said by himself.
