The Punjab Assembly is scheduled to elect leader of the house (chief minister) at 11 am today. Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahbaz Sharif is set to win the coveted slot for the third time.

Sharif, once formally elected, will take oath of office at governor’s house in the evening.

Sharif and PTI’s Mian Mahmoodur Rashid, who also enjoys the support of Pakistan Muslim League -Quaid (PML-Q), are the only two candidates for the position. Newly-elected speaker of the assembly, Rana Iqbal Khan, had earlier accepted their nominations.

At least 344 MPAs will use their right to franchise in today’s election to be held on a division basis.

Assembly secretary Maqsood Ahmad Malik said the rule of division would be used to ascertain the candidate who enjoys support of majority of the members. Moreover, separate lobbies would be earmarked for both candidates and members would be asked to go for either of the two to ascertain the number of supporters each candidate enjoyed.

The PML-N secured a two-thirds majority in the assembly by bagging 305 seats in the May 11 general election and its nominee Iqbal secured 297 votes in the contest for the speaker’s office.

The PTI and the PML-Q jointly have 35 members in the house.

Moreover, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has decided in principle to abstain from the election of the chief minister.
