June 5 was observed as Pakistani Peacekeepers Day to pay homage to Pakistani martyrs who sacrificed their lives for international peace and security.

The day was observed humility and modesty in honour of 24 brave Pakistani soldiers who sacrificed their lives while ensuring Somalia and United Nations (UN) comrades’ security in 1993. The maximum casualties occurred in a single day during “Operation United Shield.” Since then, 135 Pakistani soldiers have sacrificed their lives under the UN in different missions all over the world.

Pakistan has always expressed belief in the purpose and principles of the UN Charter and it has been actively participating in multi-national efforts to maintain peace and order since 1960, when it deployed its first ever contingent in Congo. Over the past 52 years, Pakistan has been the most significant and consistent contributor to the United Nations peacekeeping force.

At the moment more than 8000 Pakistani peacekeepers are deployed in different peacekeeping missions of the UN.
