Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahbaz Sharif, who is set to regain the office of Punjab chief minister, is richer than his elder brother, the incoming prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
According to statements of assets and liabilities submitted by them to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) along with their nomination papers, the net worth of Nawaz Sharif’s assets was Rs 261.6 million last year and the assets of Shahbaz Sharif were Rs 336.9m.
Interestingly, the worth of Nawaz’s assets increased by Rs 95.6 million in a year and that of Shahbaz dropped by Rs 56.5million. In 2011, the assets of the two brothers were worth Rs 166 million and Rs 393 million.
According to tax details, Nawaz’s total income in 2010 was Rs 9.7 million, which grew to Rs 10.6 million in 2011 and Rs 12.4 million in 2012 and he paid Rs2 million, Rs2.8 million and Rs 2.4 million as income tax.
The land holding of Nawaz increased from 934 kanals in 2010 and 2011 to 1,707 kanals in 2012. His agricultural income was Rs 5.2 million, Rs 5 million and Rs 8.3 million and he paid agricultural tax of Rs 0.75 million, 0.73 million and Rs 12.3 million during the years. He lives in a house owned by his mother.
The income of Shahbaz was Rs 3.1 million in 2010 which swelled to Rs 12.8 million in 2011 and Rs 14.9 million in 2012. He paid Rs 0.25 million, Rs 2.2 million and Rs 2.6 million as income tax. In 2010, his agricultural income from 867 kanals was Rs 3.5 million. The land holding dropped to 677 kanals in 2011and the income remained at Rs 16.5 million and Rs 16.4 million in 2011 and 2012. Agricultural tax paid by him during the three years was Rs 0.44 million, Rs 2.7 million and Rs 2.5 million. Shahbaz Sharif lives in a Rs120 million house owned by his spouse.
