Children, teachers subjected to poisonous water

40 children and two teachers fell unconscious after drinking poisonous water, while many were reported to be in a serious condition, due to lack of medical help.
According to reports, students and teachers of a primary school in Sukkur’s Saleh Patt suffered chronic stomach problem after drinking water from their school’s hand pump.
Local administration acted with traditional indifference and failed to respond with any kind of assistance despite the passage of hours. The event was brought into mainstream attention when the media took notice and succeeded in galvanising rescue teams and locals, who faced difficulties due to rough topography. The teams reached doctors in two to three hours.
Sukkur Commissioner Dr Niaz Ali Abbasi and other officials reached the scene of the incident to supervise rescue and relief activities, while so far the real cause of incident had not been ascertained.
Meanwhile, former federal minister and MNA-elect Khurshid Shah had also taken notice of the incident, and had directed the local administration to look after the welfare of stricken victims, especially children.
