Prime minister-elect Nawaz Sharif said on Thursday that Pakistan and the United States will work collectively to counter terrorism.

He was addressing US Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan James Dobbins.

Sharif said that his incoming government will make effective measures to improve the living standards of citizens, adding that all available resources will be utilised to resolve the power crisis Pakistan is facing, he continued.

Dobbins responded by saying that American businessmen will invest in Pakistan to strengthen its economy, while America will continue to play its role in strengthening democracy in the country.

Earlier in the day, Dobbins held sittings with top Pakistani military and civilian leadership in Islamabad in connection with the present and post-US Afghan scenario.

Ambassador Dobbins and his interlocutors , during their sittings with top Pakistani military and civilian brass, discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues, including advancing shared counterterrorism objectives; increasing economic opportunity; strengthening civilian democracy and civil society; and supporting an Afghan-owned and Afghan-led reconciliation process.

During his two-day visit Dobbins met Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani during which the two leaders discussed issues of mutual interest, the situation in Afghanistan and the counter terrorism measures being taken by both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Dobbins urged the need for strengthening cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan to defeat militants present on both sides of the border.

The Pakistani side also took up the issue of border violations with the US official.

Over cross-border attacks, both the sides agreed to raise the volume of information and intelligence sharing and to form a joint strategy to counter terrorist activities.

Dobbins also telephoned President Asif Ali Zardari who is in Karachi these days.

The US diplomat also called on Foreign Secretary Jalil Jillani at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Jilani briefed Dobbins about the steps taken by Pakistan for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to remain positively engaged in supporting the peace process.

  1. If Musharraf after 9/11 agreed to cooperate , he was wrong as per PML-N and now Nawaz is right. Liars….

  2. In other words, Nawaz Sharif promised to do exactly what the PPP did…..follow orders.

Yes the drones will continue and Pakistan will continue to be humiliated as the drones rain hellfire missiles down on it but, that is the reality we live with.

Nawaz lacks the force of character needed to defeat the terrorists or halt the drones.

  3. Nawaz is being closely chaproned by US. Every other day some US minion is meeting him ensuring his loyalty. Our biggest problem is that he lacks the qualities to confront and argue with logic. When Musharraf agreed the times were different. It is 2013 and this nation has evaluated the intentions of our socalled allies.
