FSC meeting discusses vulnerability of high-rise structure

The second meeting of Fire Safety Commission (FSC) was held at Rescue 1122 Headquarters on Monday.

FSC Chairman Dr Rizwan Naseer said that investigations reports of various fire incidents including Baldia Town, Karachi, Kharak Nullah incident, Aiwan-e-Mashriq Plaza, Shoe Factory Bund Road, Koh-e-Noor TV Channel fire incident and other major fire incidents clearly stressed the need for implementation of fire safety codes given in the by-laws.

Dr Rizwan said the recommendations of Fire Protection Association of Pakistan (FPAP) should be implemented to ensure life safety to the citizens living in high rise buildings.

He also approved short term policy for high rise buildings and also proposed establishment of Building Control Authority for sustainable building by-laws.

The participants of the meeting discussed that six main steps including external steel staircases, fire doors, pressurized external hydrants system, evacuation plan and emergency lighting system, installation of fire extinguishers and clear access and removal of obstructions can ensure life safety in high rise building.
