Lady worker killed in attack on polio team in Peshawar

A lady polio worker was killed and another was injured in an attack on an polio vaccination team in Peshawar on Tuesday.

The anti-polio drive in Peshawar and its surrounding areas was temporarily suspended after the attack.

According to details, two lady polio workers were busy vaccinating children in Badhabher area when unidentified armed men opened indiscriminate firing on them. One of the female workers, Sharafat, died on the spot while the other, Sunbal Gul was seriously injured. She was taken to hospital where her condition was stated to be critical.

Soon after the attack, the Peshawar Police embarked on a search operation and apprehended 19 suspects.

UNICEF and WHO have showed severe resentment over the attack on polio vaccinators in Peshawar and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The UN-affiliated bodies extending cooperation in efforts aimed eradication of polio have threatened to suspend the vaccination drive in the region.
