Protective embankments on Indus can withstand floods: DC

Hyderabad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Nawaz Soho has said that the protective embankments along the Indus River in Hyderabad district were strong enough to withstand a massive flood.
During a visit to the levees here Saturday, the DC expressed satisfaction over the reinforcement work carried out by the Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA) in the aftermath of the 2010 floods.
The DC visited the Jamshoro Front, Giddu Mal and Ghalyan embankments during his visit of the area.
Talking to the reporters, Soho observed that in comparison to the condition of the levees in 2010, the present set-up appeared far better after the height of the embankments was raised from five to six feet and due to better earthwork.
Further, the DC said that construction of illegal bunds on the Indus River would not be allowed and strict action would be taken against offenders.
“The district administration is already taking action over the encroachments on the riverbed,” he said, while adding that the SIDA would be offered complete coordination in this connection.
He informed that soon a flood monitoring control room would be set up in the DC office which would maintain liaison with the SUPARCO, SIDA and the environment department.
Moreover, the DC said that he would request the Sindh government to build dykes along the Indus River in Hyderabad district to ensure optimal protection of the city from flooding.
Meanwhile, Chairman Left Bank Canal Area Water Board Suhail Mirza, Left Bank Canal Area Water Board Director Habib Ursani, ADC-1 Aijazul Hassan and other officials also accompanied the DC.
