Though only one week is left for election campaign, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is still undecided about who to field in NA-48’s by-polls as Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday allowed PML-N’s Anjum Aqueel, the first choice of the ruling party, to contest elections.

Earlier, Aqueel’s lawyer withdrew his nomination papers without his consent, resultantly, the returning officer accepted nomination papers of Ashraf Gujjar, PML-N’s second choice.

Later, when Aqeel requested the ECP to restore his candidature as PML-N’s official candidate, the ECP granted permission to Aqeel to contest elections from NA-48 and directed the returning officer to receive his nomination papers.

Now after getting a clean chit from ECP, Aqeel is hopeful of getting a PML-N ticket.

Sources in PML-N said that party was facing an internal revolt over the award of ticket to Gujjar, who hardly joined PML-N last year. In protest, two PML-N local leaders, Faisal Shah Hamdani and Malik Rabnawaz have already announced to contest the election against the Gujjar.

Furthermore, sources said that party leadership would decided the matter today.

Political pundits believe that in case PML gives ticket to Aqeel, he could give a tough time to PTI’s Usad Umar.

NA-48 is one of the two constituencies of the federal capital. This constituency consists of both urban and rural areas. According to observers, in urban areas, this time too PTI would enjoy larger support than other candidates while the ruling PML-N could get advantage in rural areas.

  1. ……………..And then they get annoyed on complaints of maintaining double standards. They reject the nomination papers, and then retreat to please Raiwind.

  2. I think this was the only crook left apart from Hanif Abbasi. The Team is being completed by Nawaz and his Election Commission.
