Election Commission of Pakistan Secretary Ishtiak Ahmad said every humanly possible effort was made to conduct peaceful and fair elections and criticism against the ECP was not based on facts.
Talking to reporters in Islamabad on Friday‚ he said every possible effort was made to ensure peace and impartiality in the polls.
He said undue criticism had been made absent the commission by some circles, but it was not based on facts.
He said the time had come to respond to the objections of the people.
Khan said the stance of Ishaq Khakwani of PTI was fully heard by the commission and it was decided that re-polling would not be held in that constituency, as Khakwani could not satisfy the commission.
The secretary regretted that anchorpersons of two private television channels were engaged in propaganda campaign against the general elections.
He said positive criticism was welcome but character assassination could not be allowed.
He said the democratic system and the country should not suffer due to undue criticism.
Khan said with the exception of some stray incidents‚ elections were held peacefully and this had been acknowledged by the international community.
He said the election petitions would be disposed of by tribunals consisting of retired sessions’ judges in 120 days.
