The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday sought a reply within two weeks from MQM chief Altaf Hussain, and the interior and foreign secretaries in a petition seeking Altaf’s removal from the MQM’s leadership and action against him after his repatriation to Pakistan for alleged remarks against the ideology of Pakistan.

Justice Khalid Mehmood Khan passed the orders on a petition filed by Advocate Fayyaz Ahmed Mehr.

Earlier, the petitioner’s counsel submitted before the court that Altaf was a foreign national but claimed to be the chief of the MQM, a party that has been in power in Pakistan.

The petition said on May 12, Altaf addressed his party workers during which he allegedly threatened the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the establishment, the media and workers of certain political parties and their leaders and also demanded that Karachi be separated from Pakistan.

The counsel said Altaf’s demand was against the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and also against its ideology. “It is a conspiracy and a move to destabilise and create unrest in the country just to achieve his nefarious goals,” he added.

He said according to the Political Parties Order 2002, only the citizens of Pakistan can form, organise, continue or set up a political party, adding that Altaf was not a citizen of Pakistan therefore could not claim to be the chief of the political party.

The petitioner’s counsel requested the court to bar Altaf from claiming to be the MQM chief and also asked it to direct the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) to stop all media outlets from giving coverage to his speeches.

The petitioner also requested the court to issue directions with regards to bringing him back and to deal with him in accordance with the law.

After hearing the arguments, the court issued notices to the respondents and sought reply within two weeks.
