The Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Najam Sethi said on Tuesday that the WalledCity was a historical monument and a revival project to safeguard this cultural heritage was essential while presiding over a meeting regarding the Lahore Walled City Project at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
Provincial Tourism and Archaeology Minister Salima Hashmi, planning and development Minister, principal secretary to chief minister, secretaries finance, law, local government, information, Lahore Walled City Project director general (DG), Lahore district coordination officer, Archeology DG, Lahore Development Authority (LDA) DG, Auqaf DG and other officers and experts attended the meeting.
Sethi said that the project’s early completion would raise the living standards of walled city residents and would help conserve Lahore’s cultural and historical heritage. He said that there was a need for comprehensive planning to effectively implement the Lahore Walled City Project.
The chief minister said that Lahore’ historical and cultural heritage reflected ancient civilizations and its conservation and upkeep was a collective national responsibility. He directed that recommendations be formulated for preparing a master plan for this purpose. He said that the WalledCity project’s staff required capacity building.
He directed the Lahore Walled City Authority to formulate rules and regulations and decreed that Wazir Khan Mosque and Shahi Hamam be handed over to the project. He requested a report at the earliest on this matter.
