Two days in confinement at Arthur Road Jail, actor Sanjay Dutt is already feeling the heat. On his first meeting with his lawyer on Saturday, Dutt spoke of how “clueless” he was at the jail and how he had been discreetly packed in a barrack, with his friend and co-convict Yusuf Nulwalla. At present, only Nulwalla is lodged with him.
“He does not know which barrack he has been kept in. Usually, lawyer meetings happen at a designated area but Sanjay was called to the superintendent’s office today to speak,” said lawyer Rizwan Merchant.
Dutt, who is lodged in an ‘undertrials’ prison, will have to be shifted to any of the convict prisons in the state. However, sources said there was no confirmation when and where Dutt would be shifted. “Security is our priority,” a senior jail official said.
While Dutt hoped to be taken to Yerawada, to spend rest of his sentence, Merchant said there was no clarity if this would happen. “Kersi Adajania, who was in Mumbai after his conviction, has been taken to Nashik prison. Despite 83-year-old Adajania’s health, he was shifted.”
Yerawada prison happens to be one of the better maintained jails in Maharashtra. “It is sinking in slowly. Dutt hopes he is not sent to an ill-maintained prison,” Merchant added.
Another convict, Zaibunissa Kazi (70), who has been sentenced for five years, plans to appear before court on Monday. “Her health has been bad. She had to be hospitalised last week. However, she has no choice but to surrender,” her daughter said.
