Caretaker Interior Minister Malik Habib Khan on Friday said that the media and the masses had played a vital role in achieving the 60 percent voter turnout on May 11.

Addressing a Police Darbar, the minister said that despite terrorist threats, the caretaker government succeeded in conducting free, fair and transparent elections.

He lauded the cooperation of the provincial caretaker governments, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), law enforcement agencies and the political leadership in making polling possible.

He said the interior ministry had acted upon the ECP’s plan for organising transparent polls. “I must appreciate the cooperation extended by the Pakistan Army in the elections and other law enforcement agencies. There were threats from terrorists during the election but due to effective coordination between the provinces and law enforcement agencies, we succeeded in holding elections peacefully.” the minister said.

The minister said that he allowed his past experiences to guide law and order decision making during the elections successfully.

Habib also appreciated the Islamabad police inspector general for maintaining law and order in the federal capital.
