Weapons’ license renewal a headache!

Owing to mismanagement and an ambiguous policy of the Interior Ministry, weapon licence seekers and those wanting to renew their licences are facing multiple problems, Pakistan Today has learnt.
There is no clear policy of the ministry and NADRA regarding renewal of licences while on the other hand some officials are also involved in fake license revalidation. On Wednesday night, Federal Investigations Agency (FIA) arrested two senior officers of NADRA from its headquarters for their alleged involvement in a fake licence scam.
“I visited a NADRA office in Lahore for renewal of my pistol’s license, but I was told that licences’ renewal is banned. Then, I moved to Islamabad but here too I am being asked to visit after June 30,” said Ali Arshad, while talking to Pakistan Today at an outlet of NADRA in Jinnah Super Market. When Pakistan Today inquired about the policy of Interior Ministry from the NADRA officer dealing with revalidation of licences at the said outlet, he said that the director general concerned verbally informed him that there is a ban on renewal of licences till June 30. “I’m doing what I was told to do. I was asked only to revalidate old licences. Whenever I am asked to renew licenses I will happily oblige,” he said. Responding to a query, he said, under the policy, all expired licences till June 30 would be treated as valid.
On the other hand, a number of people, who wanted to get their licenses renewed, expressed dissatisfaction over the ambiguous policy. “I have no idea what type of policies they are adopting. Despite having a genuine license, we are facing problems,” said Liaqat Naz, who visited the said outlet for renewal of a 12-bore gun license.
Another applicant seeking a licence renewal said, “When NADRA officials are unaware about the notification of the ministry, how could we convince police officials deputed at spot checking that we are allowed to carry weapons.”
Meanwhile, NADRA Chairman Tariq Malik said there is no ban on renewal of licenses. He said the G-10 NADRA office is supposed to renew licenses. “Due to some reasons, we have slowed down the renewal process. But, it doesn’t mean we are not renewing licenses. Our G-10 office is dealing with the matter. If anyone wants to get his licence renewed, he may visit that office,” Malik said.
Sources in NADRA said some officers are involved in revalidation of bogus documents. They alleged that after getting hefty bribes, some officers were revalidating licenses. However, the NADRA chief differed, saying he has been keeping an open eye on all affairs in his organisation.
“I myself got two senior officers arrested, who were allegedly involved in a scam. Currently, FIA is investigating them,” he said. Sources said director Faisal Zameer and one of his deputies, who enjoy political backing, revalidated dozens of prohibited and non prohibited bore weapons licenses.

    Licence is valid till 30 dec 2013
    But who will tell the police…??

    THIS IS REALLY A BIG PROBLEM FOR US REGARDING RENEWAL OF ARMS LICENCES. GOVT MUST TAKE ACTION ON THIS. I HAVE VISITED MANY TIMES TO NARDA (G-10 OFFICE) BUT THEY REFUSE TO RENEW THE ARMS LICENCES. WHAT SHOULD WE DO? – PLEASE HELP US ON THIS PROBLEM.

  7. when you call at the NADRA Help line and inquired about renewal of license they said its open you can get renew your license, but when you visit at G 10 office, they Refuse to Renew it and said its banned due to recent statement of Ministry of interior. Carrying Arm with license is difficult for citizen but all terrorists and robbers can use weapon without any license 🙂 … what a system we have..

  13. Guys , i need to get a new handgun license for Lahore, Punjab . I am not sure about the process. There are arms dealer but not sure about their authenticity , don't want to carry weapon without license.

  15. Syed Taqi Jafar I have visited NADRA office at Liaqatabad for renewal of Computerised Arm Licence of Non Prohibited Bore. Wait and see as there is no policy still a banned on it what I will do. We all request to His Excellency Mr.Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan the Minister of Interior to please take personal interest for the redressal of our grievances. We all pray for his long life and prosperity. Thanks we remains.

  16. This is what they want; law abiding citizen cannot pay for renewal or even cannot get a new license. In this way our government is promoting/indirectly convincing people to own illegal unlicensed weapons. Actually law abiding citizen really wants legal license and to pay it's yearly fees but our government is against it. Get a life… what a crappy system !

Pakistan should learn!

    Banning arms licenses will not bring any peace. Those who use it for killing, terror are not bothered and will never carry a licensed arm. This will only disarm normal, good guys and deprive them of their rights of self defense. Please don’t tell me that security agencies are here to stop- in Pakistan everyone should have a licensed weapon and have the right of self defense.

  22. I received my shotgun lic today from NADRA after following up for 1 1/2 year and the expiry date on the lic is 14.03.2013, This is absurd receiving an expired license. HOW DO I GET IT RENEWED , Nadra says call Min.of Interior – Islamabad for it….. HELP SOMEONE..

    After surrendering the Book of License for 7.62 bore AK 47 (issued in the seventies by MOI GOP). The same was returned to MOI thru NADRA at Nowshera KPK and instead computerized License No99995117918 was issued on 24-01-2012 thru NADRA Nowshra Office. The License expiry date was 23-01-2013. The expiry date was extended upto 31-12-2014 by the MOI GOP.

    I visited ARMS SECTION BRANCH NADRA headquarter at Islamabad where I was told to wait of MOI approval for renewal of my computerized License beyond 23-01-2013. I am really tired as I have several calls to NADRA where reply was always WAIT FOR APPROVL OF MOI.Is there any one god fearing person who can help me and several others. I will request the Honorable Minister of Interior to help in this case for I will be highly obliged.

  35. i want to renew my booklit license. many time to contact nadra office they said ministry of interior banned. kindly tell m what can i do ?
