Kerry calls Nawaz, congratulates on election victory

The State Department Monday said Secretary of State John Kerry has called Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif to congratulate him on a strong showing in Saturday’s nationwide polls.

According to spokesperson Jennifer Psaki, Secretary Kerry called Nawaz on Monday afternoon and told the former prime minister he (Kerry) “looks forward to working with the government as the government is formed in Pakistan”.

“We respect the choice of Pakistani people and the United States looks forward to engaging with the next democratically elected government, when it is formed in the coming weeks,” the spokesperson said at the daily briefing.

The United States, she said has been encouraged by Pakistanis’ much larger participation in elections.
