14 women make it to the assemblies in election 2013

According to the unofficial results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), 14 women were successful in the May 11 general elections by winning five National and nine provincial assembly seats.

The women, who won the National Assembly seats, included Sumaira Malik, a candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz who won from NA-69 Khushab-I with 118,108 votes defeating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate Umar Aslam Khan, who secured 78,855.

The second successful candidate was Ghulam Bibi Bharwana, who also contested elections on a PML-N ticket from NA 88 Jhang-cum-Chiniot. She got 87,002 votes taking a lead of 19000 votes from Makhdoomzada Syed Asad Hayat who secured 68,850 votes as an independent candidate.

The third National Assembly seat for women was claimed by Saira Afzal Tarrar, daughter of former president Rafiq Tarrar. She won in Hafizabad-I NA-102 by receiving 93,013 votes on a PML-N ticket. She defeated Chaudhary Shaukat Ali Bhatti, an independent candidate.

Faryal Talpur of the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians won a seat from NA-207 (Larkana-cum-Shikarpur-cum-Kamber Shahdadkot) securing 83,918 votes. She defeated Ghinwa Bhutto of the Pakistan People’s Party (Shaheed Bhutto) who secured only 28,191 votes.

Former National Assembly speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza of the PPP won the seat from NA 225 (Badin-cum-Tando Muhammad Khan-II) with 11,0684 votes, taking a lead of 45,000 votes from Bibi Yasmeen Shah of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional, who got 65,239 votes.

In the Punjab Assembly, PML-N candidate in PP 34 (Sargodha-VII) Dr Nadia Aziz won with 33744 votes, PML-N’s Iffat Maraj Awan succeeded in PP-53 (Faisalabad-III) with 44,018 votes, independent candidate Rashida Yaqoob was declared successful in PP 78 (Jhang II) with 42,194 votes, and PML-N’s Nazia Raheel won the seat in from PP 88 (Toba Tek Singh-V) with 36,622 votes.

Mohtarma Riaz Amanat Ali Virk of the PML-N was declared successful in PP 101 (Gujranwala-XI) with 24,413 votes, another PML-N candidate Sameena Noor succeeded in PP 185 (Okara I) with 26,621 votes while Nagma Mushtaq of the same party won in PP 206 (Multan XIII) with 43,050 votes.

In the Sindh Assembly, PPP’s Parveen Aziz and Saniya won in PS-76 (Dadu III) and PS-109 (Karachi XXI) respectively. However, no woman succeeded in reserving a slot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan assemblies on the general seats.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan and the UN, 516 women tested their fates in the elections this year on general seats – 161 for the National Assembly and 355 for the provincial assemblies.

  1. After free / fair elections held in 1970, non of general elections held fair & free afterward. Election 2013 was fully rigged everywhere in Pakistan.
    No one believes that election is fair. Mostly, results r engineered as per liking of some unseen authorities, local or foreign.
