Army deployment fails to ensure trouble-free polls in Karachi

Even though thousands of army troops were present in Karachi to maintain law and order, they seemed indifferent in taking action against the enemies of peace on the election day.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) called in the Karachi corp commander and requested him to ensure that free, fair and transparent elections were held in the metropolis but apparently the appeal went unheard.

The ECP then called the Sindh chief secretary who later ordered the additional home secretary but all to no avail.

An encouraging number of military troops were seen outside polling stations before the start of polling but as the process started they seemed to vanish.

However, there were a few polling stations where military personnel remained throughout and the security of these stations was better.

Polling was also suspended at many places due to clashes and in absence of law enforcement agencies. At various places, workers of political parties snatched ballot papers and boxes as the polling staff in Karachi was not provided with security during transportation.

Rigging continued during polls at various polling stations of the metropolis throughout the day due to non-implementation of scheduled modified security plan for Karachi.

Besides the army, the Rangers and local police also seemed unresponsive against the delinquents.

Strict security arrangements had been made for the eve of May 11. Besides deployment of security personnel on ground, aerial supervision was also planned but nothing of the sort could be seen.
