Eminent personalities, national leaders, former members of national and provincial assemblies as well as other prominent figures of the country, turned to polling stations on Saturday to cast their votes and played their due role in supporting democracy.
The Sindh High Court (SHC) Chief Justice (CJ) Musheer Alam could not cast his vote in NA-250 constituency and returned home after waiting for more than one and a half hours in an overcrowded polling station.
The SHC CJ went to the polling station near his home where he was registered as a voter, but polling related items could not reach the polling stations of NA-250 where people had been waiting for hours.
Reports said that under immense exerted by the MQM, the polling staff did not turn up at most polling stations in the constituency on time. There were also reports that election related material was also snatched from the staff.
Meanwhile, the caretaker Sindh CM Justice (r) Zahid Qurban Alvi cast his vote at 9.30 am at Qazi Khuda Bux Government Primary School, Soldier Bazaar.
Further, Sindh Chief Secretary Ajaz Choudhry, Sindh IGP Shahid Nadeem Baloch and other officials were also present on the occasion.
The CM after casting his vote also interacted with the people of the area. Some of them complained of delay in the commencement of the polling process.
On hearing this, he relayed the problem to Provincial Election Commissioner (PEC) so that the PEC could dispatch the staff and material to enable the immediate start of polling process.
Talking to media persons, the CM said that the provincial interim government worked day and night to ensure that elections happened on time.
He also urged the people to exercise their right of franchise freely and elect representatives whom they considered better than other contestants.
Later, the CM also visited Gulbahar, Nazimabad, SITE, Mauripur, Sultanabad and other areas in the metropolis.
Visiting different polling stations, he interacted with people who were standing in queues while waiting to cast their votes.
Moreover, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (r) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim cast his vote at the Hampton School Clifton Block.
Talking to reporters, he appealed to the people to exercise their right of franchise.
The CEC pointed out that a transparent system had been devised for the polls and no one would be able to get any opportunity of rigging the results in anyone’s favour.
He further pointed out that the future of the nation was attached with democracy and termed May 11 as the most important day in this connection. Justice (r) Fakhruddin also lauded the role of the media with regard to the elections and described this as a very positive development.
