A day before the elections the minister for water and power has expressed his doubts regarding the provision of electricity during general elections on May 11.

According to details, the ministry for water and power has neither been provided Rs35 billion nor 152mmcf of gas to the power sector and so far there is no stock of fuel built for three days.

The caretaker Federal Minister for Water and Power, Dr. Musadik Malik, explained “We have been provided Rs10 billion only for the Pakistan State Oil to prevent its default on one letter of credit. The ministry had actually demanded Rs150 billion so that all the IPPs could be put on the clock to overcome the power crisis. But the finance ministry said it would provide only Rs45 billion on account of fiscal constraints.”

However, out of Rs45 billion, just Rs10 billion were released, which were directly given to PSO and the remaining amount of Rs35 billion has not yet been released.“Now, the Finance Ministry has come up with a new offer that it would arrange the fuel for three-day stock for power houses on one month credit and the Ministry of Water and Power has agreed to it, but we are still in the Catch 22 situation as so far PSO has not built the stock of fuel for three days at our depots.
