Caretaker Interior Minister Malik Habib on Thursday said the government had completed preparations for the peaceful conduct of general elections on May 11, adding that people should come out of their houses to vote on the day as the government will be there to protect them.
Talking to reporters after paying a visit to the Rangers Headquarters in Lahore, the interior minister said Pakistan was passing through a historic moment now as it was the first time that the power was being transferred from one civilian government to another civilian government.
“The government has accomplished all the measures for peaceful elections with the Pakistan Army remaining on alert to provide full assistance, advocating the people to partake in the voting to prove that they will not capitulate to the terrorists.”
Habib expressed grief over the injury to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan in his Tuesday’s collapse from a lifter while being raised to the rally stage and prayed for his early recuperation.
Separately, Habib called on Punjab Governor Ahmed Mehmood and discussed with him the overall political and security situation of the country.
Habib apprised the governor that all important security steps were being taken by the government for upcoming polls. He said the government had increased cooperation with those provincial governments where terror activities were on the rise to avoid further attacks. He said the army and the Rangers would be deployed at sensitive places when needed.
