The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has directed the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to stop TV channels from airing personally-targeted and defamatory advertisement campaigns.
“False, fabricated, personally-targeted and defamatory campaign advertisements are violation of relevant laws and aforesaid code of conduct and it is likely to create law and order situation in the constituencies,” the ECP said in a letter to the PEMRA.
The letter added that the ECP had taken a serious notice of repetition of such advertisements and directed PEMRA to make sure any such advertisements were immediately stopped from being aired.
The ECP also directed PEMRA to strictly ensure that there was no airing or broadcasting of such defamatory political advertisements against any political party or a contesting candidates until the culmination of election process.
