Transportation plan approved for polls

The district government of Rawalpindi approved the transportation plan for the May 11 general polls after the Punjab government directed the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) to provide transport for election duties.

Sources said due to low fares transporters were willing to rent out their vehicles to the government for elections.

The Punjab government has ordered that the district’s traffic police would be responsible for the arrangement of vehicles. The provincial government has also ordered that each polling station would be provided at least one vehicle for transportation. After these directives, the traffic police have begun hiring vehicles for the elections day.

In Rawalpindi, about 930 vehicles will be hired for 7 constituencies of the National Assembly at a cost of Rs 6.2 million.

Rawalpindi District Coordination Officer Arshid Mehmood Langrial has ordered Rawalpindi Transport Authority (RTA) Secretary Awais Tariq Tarar to monitor the transportation plan and implement it through the assistant commissioners. Vehicles will be acquired on rent for two days.
