The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday announced that election campaigning would have to end 48 hours before May 11.

ECP spokesman Khurshid Alam said the commission had set the midnight of May 9 as the deadline for halt to all public meetings and political campaigning.

He said candidates violating the deadline would have to face various penalties including disqualification‚ fine up to Rs 100,000 or withholding their results by the returning officers.

The ECP said that elections in those constituencies where the Supreme Court had disqualified the contesting candidates would not be postponed. The commission said that it was the responsibility of political parties not to award tickets to candidates who did not fulfill the criteria as described in the Constitution.

The commission said distribution of ballot papers to various districts had been initiated under the supervision of ECP staff whereas troops were overseeing the transportation of ballot papers.
