Residents of Old Sabzi Mandi turned violent while protesting against land grabbers in the metropolis on Wednesday.
Police and eyewitnesses said that residents of Old Sabzi Mandi area, including scores of women, took to the roads in protest against illegal constructions being carried out by land mafia.
The situation turned violent when mafia supporters opened fire on the infuriated protestors who later ransacked dozens of area shops and torched several vehicles.
Rioting lasted for more than three hours and had turned the area into a battle field. Police said that one man was injured as a result of firing.
Meanwhile, police and rangers resorted to aerial firing to disperse the unruly mob.
