A suicide bomber killed at least eight people and wounded 45 others when he rammed his motorcycle into a bus on University road near Azam Tower in Peshawar on Monday, police said.

The attack targeted a senior official in the city administration, Sahibzada Anees, who passed by shortly before the blast in the Jehangir Abad neighbourhood.

“At least eight people were killed and 45 others were wounded in the suicide bombing,” police official Mohammad Faisal told AFP.

Hospital officials confirmed the updated death toll.

“The commissioner, who passed just a minute before from the road, was the target of the bombing, but he escaped unhurt as the bomber missed the target and struck his motorcycle into a passenger bus,” Faisal said.

Body parts of the suicide bomber were also found at the blast site, he added.

Bomb disposal officials said the explosives weighed up to six kilograms (13 pounds).

The road, where the blast took place, is one of the busiest roads in Peshawar. Nearby cars were damaged and passengers were affected by the blast.

The injured were shifted to the Khyber Teaching hospital where an emergency was declared. An emergency was also declared at two other hospitals in the city.

Seperately, a bomb went off outside the election office of independent candidate Nasir Khan Afridi in the Maqsoodabad area of Peshawar, killing three people and wounding more than 19, on Sunday.

Violence has spiked in the nuclear-armed country ahead of national elections on May 11 with at least 56 people killed in attacks targeting politicians and political parties since April 11.

  1. Blood bath continues and government not doing anything to improve situation. Most of terrorism victims are citizens but government failed to eliminate terrorists , their hideouts and maintain peaceful environment for elections. Most surprising how terrorists enter cities and cross check posts which are hard for citizens because of heavy search but terrorists still manages to attack any place or specific targets without any resistances . Elections ahead security matters should handover to army without any delay because police have been rescue workers they appears after incidents happens and incapable to handle situation.Army should also given free hand curb terrorists and Afghan borders should be closed and refuges movement should be restricted to their camps. Afghanistan is anti Pakistan terrorists safe heaven and been used against by anti Pakistan elements there.

  2. Disgusting, shocked and unfortunate. I astound at the apathy of worst law and order situation that descending to the abyss while election is approach ing. What the so called intelligence agencies are doing when the hapless and hopeless people have been left at the mercy of extremist evils. If that’s their own calculated manoeuvrability to hijack or postpone the election, , why to litter the flesh and bones of humans in the name of Islam, the religion of peace for entire humanity irrespective of differences.
